Transplant Specialist - Flatwork

The Transplant Specialist is responsible for the planting and initial care of all annual flatted plants. Each day, the transplanter selects developmentally established young shoots in plug trays ("plugs") and transplants them into 36-count flats pre-filled with soil. The transplanter is responsible for tagging each flat with appropriate plant tags, placing flats in orderly rows on the ground, and watering the flats. The transplanter is also responsible for keeping a detailed inventory of their plantings.

This position requires availability 4 days a week from mid-February through the beginning of May. This is a largely independent role within the greater team environment. As this position ends in early May, a Transplant Specialist may be hired into a retail role at the end of their transplanting season.

Requirements:

This is a physically active role, requiring the associate to stand or walk for the entirety of their shift. In the course of transplanting flats, this associate will need to perform a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Lifting and carrying stacks of flats
  • Leaning or bending for an extensive period of time
  • Loading and unloading stacks of flats containing soil at various heights
  • Assisting an experienced associate to fill flats with soil using greenhouse machinery
  • Thoroughly sweeping floors
  • Pushing heavy carts

This position would be a good fit for anyone who enjoys working with plants, doesn't mind repetitive tasks, is detail-oriented, and enjoys working independently.

Planting Associate (Part Time, Seasonal)

If you enjoy working with plants and playing in the dirt, this role is for you! This associate's primary task is planting and transplanting. Every day will look a little different, with a mix of collaborative and independent work, as we prepare our plants and our greenhouse for our retail season. This associate may plant in pots, large containers, hanging baskets, window boxes or specialty planters; or transplant perennials, bushes, or shrubs. This position runs mid-February through the end of April. A Planting Associate may be considered for a retail role at the end of planting season.

Requirements:

This is a physically active role, requiring the associate to stand or walk for the entirety of their shift. In the course of transplanting, this associate may need to:

  • Lift or carry pots filled with soil
  • Lean or bend for extended periods
  • Load or unload pots containing soil at various heights
  • Perform light sweeping or squeegeeing of floors
  • Push carts loaded with pots or plants

This position would be a great fit for anyone who likes to stay active, enjoys working with plants, appreciates variety in their work, and enjoys a mix of independent and collaborative work.

General Associate (Part Time, Seasonal)

This position requires no previous plant knowledge or experience. This associate is responsible for performing a wide range of tasks to support our Planting Team and prepare the greenhouse for our retail season. These tasks may include, but are not limited to:

  • Lifting or carrying items
  • Loading or unloading containers filled with soil at various heights
  • Transporting containers filled with soil
  • Assisting an experienced team member in filling flats or pots with soil using greenhouse machinery Filling large containers with soil
  • Sweeping or squeegeeing floors
  • Attaching wires to hanging baskets of various kinds
  • Hanging and positioning hanging baskets
  • Pricing items

This is a seasonal role, concluding at the end of April. However, General Associates are encouraged to stay on for retail season as a Grower or Junior Grower.

Requirements:

This is a physically active role, and may require the associate to:

  • Lift and carry items
  • Load or unload items at various heights
  • Bend or lean for extended periods
  • Push or pull carts
  • Perform overhead work for extended periods
  • Work on ladders in a greenhouse environment
  • Perform repetitive tasks

This position would be a good fit for anyone who appreciates variety in their work, would like a physically challenging job, has a strong work ethic, and enjoys a blend of independent and collaborative work.

Retail Season

Gardener (Part Time, Seasonal)

With at least some plant knowledge and experience, this associate can help answer customer questions & troubleshoot common gardening problems. This associate knows what to look for to identify unhealthy plants, and spends their time in the greenhouse answering customer questions, performing light to heavy pruning of perennials and annuals, and occasionally working the register to process payments.

While this associate is primarily valued for their knowledge, and their position is customer-oriented, they will be expected to work with the team to accomplish miscellaneous daily objectives including but not limited to:

  • Transplanting
  • Deadheading
  • Stocking
  • Rearranging or reorganizing disarrayed tables
  • Sweeping and/or squeegeeing floors
  • Creating beautiful displays

Requirements:

This is a physically active role, and requires the associate to stand or walk for most of their shift. They will also need to lean, bend, and may need to briefly lift heavy items, i.e., hanging baskets.

This position would be a good fit for anyone who has a passion for plants and gardening, has a good knowledge of plants and their common maladies, enjoys helping people, appreciates variety in their work, and enjoys working on a team. This is a seasonal role, with an anticipated end date in June or July, based on operational needs.

Junior Gardener (Part Time, Seasonal)

This associate may have little to no prior plant knowledge or experience, but is eager to learn. They will work with our Gardeners, and can pick up a lot of valuable knowledge along the way! This associate may be asked to perform light pruning of annuals with careful instruction. During our busiest days, this associate will spend most of their shift at the front, operating a cash register to process payments. However, they will get an opportunity to participate in a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Answering customer questions
  • Stocking and moving plants as needed
  • Reorganizing and rearranging disarrayed tables
  • Sweeping and/or squeegeeing floors
  • Deadheading
  • Replacing or retrieving lighter hanging baskets

Requirements:

This is a physically active role, and requires this associate to stand or walk for most of their shift. They will also need to lean, bend, climb a ladder, and may need to briefly lift heavy items, i.e., hanging baskets.

This position would be a good fit for anyone who enjoys helping people, likes to learn new things, appreciates variety in their work, has a strong work ethic, and enjoys working on a team. This is a seasonal role, with an anticipated end date in July, based on operational needs.

Junior Grower (Part Time, Seasonal)

This associate may have little to no prior plant knowledge or experience, but is eager to learn. They will receive instruction from our Grower or directly from our Nurseryman. This associate may be asked to perform light watering with careful instruction. This associate's primary tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Moving heavy items
  • Loading and unloading plants and supplies from trailers as needed
  • Stocking
  • Reorganizing and rearranging disarrayed tables
  • Retrieving hanging baskets for customers
  • Loading purchases in customer vehicles
  • Sweeping and/or squeegeeing floors
  • Deadheading

Requirements:

This is a physically active role that requires standing or walking for the majority of each shift, as well as frequently lifting and carrying heavy items. This associate will be asked to climb ladders, to carry items up and down ladders, to push heavy carts, to bend and lean, to perform overhead work for extended periods, and occasionally to perform repetitive physical tasks such as loading or unloading.

This is a good fit for anyone who appreciates variety in their work, would like a physically challenging job, has a strong work ethic, enjoys helping people, and doesn't mind working independently. This is a seasonal role, with an anticipated end date in July, based on operational needs.
